Initiative orders turns. On a turn, a character usually moves and takes one main action. Some characters also have bonus actions or reactions based on their features or the situation.
Hit points, spell slots, class features, equipment, and rests affect what a character can do. The game becomes clearer when you see how those resources recover or run out.
A strong character still needs the party. Frontline defense, scouting, social skills, support magic, damage, and utility all matter in different scenes.
