The table speaks first

Most play starts as conversation. Say what your character is trying to do in ordinary language. The DM will ask for a roll only when the result is uncertain or risky.

Beginner

The DM is not the opponent

The Dungeon Master describes the world, plays non-player characters, presents danger, and applies rules. The DM should challenge the party, not try to defeat the players.

Beginner

Your character sheet is a control panel

It tracks hit points, armor class, abilities, skills, attacks, spells, equipment, and features. You do not need to remember every number if you know where to find it.

Beginner

The party is the group

The party is the group of player characters. D&D works best when those characters have reasons to cooperate, even if they disagree, joke, argue, or have different goals.

Good first questions

  • What is my character trying to do?
  • What danger or cost is present?
  • Is this roleplay, exploration, or combat?
  • Where is that number on my sheet?
  • What should I roll, if anything?
